Background of the study
Deforestation continues to be a major environmental challenge, particularly impacting rural communities dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods. In Akure North, rampant tree clearance for agricultural expansion, urbanization, and commercial activities has led to significant environmental degradation (Akinwale, 2023). This phenomenon not only disrupts local biodiversity but also adversely affects soil fertility, water retention, and micro-climatic conditions, all of which are crucial for sustainable farming practices (Babatunde, 2024). Rural farmers, who rely heavily on natural resources, face increasing challenges such as reduced crop yields and heightened vulnerability to climate extremes. Additionally, deforestation contributes to the erosion of traditional knowledge systems and community resilience. Recent studies emphasize the need for sustainable forest management practices that balance economic development and environmental conservation (Akinwale, 2023). This research critically evaluates the nexus between deforestation and agricultural productivity, providing insights into the cascading effects on rural livelihoods and proposing potential mitigation strategies (Babatunde, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Deforestation in Akure North Local Government Area is undermining rural agricultural productivity and the sustainability of local farming practices. The rapid depletion of forest resources has resulted in soil degradation, reduced water availability, and loss of biodiversity, which directly affect crop yields and farmers’ incomes. There is a need to critically assess the extent of deforestation and understand its direct and indirect effects on rural livelihoods. Moreover, the lack of sustainable management practices and enforcement of environmental policies exacerbates the problem, calling for immediate intervention to secure both environmental and economic stability (Babatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the extent of deforestation in Akure North.
To evaluate its impacts on soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
To identify sustainable mitigation strategies for rural farmers.
Research questions:
What is the extent of deforestation in Akure North?
How does deforestation affect soil fertility and crop yields?
What sustainable practices can mitigate the adverse effects on rural farming?
Research Hypotheses:
Deforestation is significantly reducing soil fertility in Akure North.
Reduced forest cover is directly linked to decreased agricultural productivity.
Adoption of sustainable practices can improve rural farming resilience.
Significance of the study
This study underscores the critical link between deforestation and rural agricultural challenges, offering valuable insights for policymakers, environmental conservationists, and the farming community. Its findings aim to drive sustainable land management policies and bolster rural resilience against environmental degradation (Akinwale, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating deforestation and its impact on rural farmers within Akure North Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Deforestation: The permanent removal of forests for non-forest use.
Soil Fertility: The capacity of soil to support plant growth.
Sustainable Practices: Methods that meet current needs without compromising future resource availability.
